Top Horror Games of 2024. A historic year for horror video games, 2024 has seen the unexpected success of the Silent Hill 2 Remake and the release of much-awaited sequels like Sons of the Forest.
This year, it feels like every big horror game, whether physical or psychological, triple-A or independent, had something fresh to offer. A few games, however, distinguished themselves from their contemporaries with their captivating ambiance, relentless scares, or daring explorations of the most sinister recesses of human nature. These are some of the top horror games of 2024.
Silent Hill 2
The Silent Hill 2 remake was not expected to be good by anyone, least of all Silent Hill enthusiasts. It’s difficult to sell a remake of any cherished classic, and the marketing for this one didn’t help. However, Bloober Team’s version of Silent Hill 2 completely exceeded all expectations when it was released in October. Nearly every aspect of the original Silent Hill 2 was included in this flawless, next-generation remake, but there were also many fresh twists and turns. Although it would never completely replace the original, it would be a great addition to it and demonstrate that the Silent Hill series is still relevant today, even after all these years.
Mouth Washing
It would be a full spoiler to describe all the reasons Mouthwashing is so amazing, but here’s the main idea: the freighter ship Tulpar intentionally crashes at the beginning, causing protective foam to spread throughout the hull. Lacking enough supplies to finish the trip, the crew accepts their fate and turns on the ethanol-based mouthwash supplies in the cargo hold, then each other as their problems escalate and sinister truths are revealed. Let’s just say the rest of the game is relentlessly bleak, achingly evocative, and shockingly weird.
Alan Wake 2
The main purpose of The Lake House is to connect the metafictional, reality-bending duology with Control, another significant horror film by Remedy Entertainment. In terms of gameplay, it is very similar to the base game: classic survival horror that is almost flawlessly done, with severely constrained ammo supplies and intense, overwhelming encounters. But with its confusing, constantly shifting surroundings and some of the most horrifying monsters the series has yet seen, The Lake House amplifies the surrealism present in the original game.
STALKER 2
The release of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, the first new series installment in more than ten years, felt almost miraculous. The original Ukrainian studio, GSC Game World, worked on STALKER 2 for more than 15 years. To learn the truth about an unusual device that destroyed his home, Skif, the new protagonist, ventures into the irradiated Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. He discovers a variety of horrors as he travels around the huge and dangerous area, including mutant animals, unexplained events, and, of course, ruthlessly self-centered people.
