As it stands, viewers believed that films and television programs have to have clear-cut plots and messages, so why would anyone bother creating a follow-up to what ought to have been a definitive tale? It deserves a place on our list just for that reason.
Avatar: The Way of Water
As previously stated, we live in the age of sequels, yet 2022 somehow produced two of the greatest sequels ever. After a thirteen-year delay from the original Avatar film, Avatar: The Way of Water took its sweet time to get to theaters, but it didn’t let fans down and gave them a whole new Pandora to adore. The idea of the sequel being more about Sully and Neytiri’s kids rather than continuing to focus on the parents’ tale made it seem as though you could have ignored the first one entirely and still understood what was happening. The encounter was further enhanced by the incredible visual effects.
Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse
Is it the best Spider-Man film ever made, the best Spider-Man sequel ever made, or just the best film ever made? Audiences said it might be all three. The sequel to 2018’s Into the Spiderverse faced a great deal of pressure to equal the popularity that the first movie achieved five years prior. Rather, the follow-up exceeded all expectations and had audiences talking more than No Way Home did. Almost everyone who watches finds the story of Miles discovering that his destiny as Spider-Man is set in stone and cannot be altered to be emotionally resonant when Miles decides that he is responsible for his own fate.
Godfather: Part II (1974)
No one believed Francis Ford Capolla could surpass his legendary masterwork, The Godfather, which swept the globe in 1972. Instead, Capolla created a sequel that is today regarded as the greatest movie sequel ever, demonstrating to the world what a true genius he was behind the camera. The Godfather: Part II is equally as fantastic as the first one, if not better. It tells the tale of Michael Corleone’s gradual descent into organized crime while highlighting how his father started their family’s history in the first place through flashbacks. Fifty years later, the film still merits every accolade because it is more complicated, darker, and holds the audience’s attention throughout at a pace that is rarely surpassed.
Alien (1986)
Without a doubt, James Cameron has some things to say to anyone who believes that viewers don’t desire films with strong, female leads. When Alien was released, it blew people away because of the small space in which Cameron was able to tell his sci-fi story. Aliens, which was released a few years later, combined sci-fi and horror in a way that terrified viewers. The movie’s alien monsters are nonetheless eerie and resilient in the face of our current problems. Get away from her, you bitch! Sigourney Weaver performed a performance of a lifetime, proving to everyone that girls may be even more badass than boys.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
A lot of power comes with a lot of responsibility. Even if the franchise has seen two reboots in the past 20 years, this line will endure from the beginning. After acquiring and perfecting his abilities as Spider-Man, Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2 has to accept that he is limited by his skills. Include Alfred Molina’s portrayal of Doc Ock, which is perhaps the best ever supervillain performance in film, and you have one of the best sequels ever to hit theaters. (Speaking of Sam Raimi films, Evil Dead II is also quite high on the list.)
The Dark Knight (2008)
It’s puzzling that a whole generation of people can’t hear the name without thinking of Heath Ledger, especially for a character as well-known and mysterious as The Joker. Without a doubt, Christopher Nolan created a masterpiece with The Dark Knight, since the narrative of Bruce Wayne accepting that he cannot do everything (seeing a trend here?) was as realistic as it was in Spider-Man 2. However, viewers worldwide are aware that the film’s greatest accomplishment was how flawless the late, great Heath Ledger’s performance was; may he rest in peace.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2014
It’s true that this is the third consecutive superhero film to rank among the top sequels, and they’re great. Despite not being as well-known as the first two, Captain America: The Winter Soldier has a particular position in its own right. For a very long time, The Winter Soldier was the best MCU film and was without a doubt a fantastic film. Nevertheless, despite the abundance of projects the MCU has produced in recent years, many fans of the franchise still think that The Winter Soldier is at the top of the list.
