Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal are reuniting for “The Accountant 2,” the follow-up to the 2016 action thriller. The movie will debut at the South by Southwest Film & Television Festival on March 8, 2025, and then go into theaters on April 25, 2025.
In this sequel, Affleck reprises his role as Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant with a talent for uncooking the books of crime organizations. This time, he’s lured out of his seclusion by a Treasury Agent, Marybeth Medina, played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson, to help solve a murder connected to his past. Razane Jammal is a new cast addition as a Palestinian woman who gets roped into the sinister drama, while Christian’s estranged brother Brax, played by Jon Bernthal, helps him unravel the mystery.
“The first one is an action movie, this is really more a deep look at the brothers’ emotional bond,” Gavin O’Connor, who directed the original, tells PEOPLE. It’s an action movie that dealt with human connection and love,” he says, stating the necessity for a human connection between the characters and addressing human trafficking.
The original movie was a hit financially, pulling in $155 million worldwide off a $44 million budget. And yet, the sequel struggled through an eight-year development odyssey that O’Connor called “brutal,” filled with delays and trials.
Netflix is yet to reveal any new cast additions, although Affleck and Bernthal have previously stated interest in revisiting their roles. Particularly exciting to Affleck is the combination of working with Bernthal again, and how that off-screen feeling will translate on-screen as brothers.
The film also bring back J.K. Simmons as Ray King, the head of the Treasury Department’s financial crimes bureau. Notably, the original film’s cast members, which included Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, Jean Smart and John Lithgow, are not returning.
Considering future installments, O’Connor sees “The Accountant” as a trilogy and plans to expand the story in future installments depending on audience reception.
Best of all, it promises to deliver on its blend of intensity and family drama when “The Accountant 2” hits theaters on April 25, 2025.
