Netflix has announced that its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman will conclude with its upcoming second season, set to release later this year.
The additional season was never in the plan, according to the showrunner Allan Heinberg, who said that the series always intended its final and only season to focus on Dream’s story — and they didn’t get enough material to make another one. He said it came down to a question of narrative, not to recent controversies surrounding Gaiman.
Multiple women have recently come out to allege sexual misconduct by Neil Gaiman, including non-consensual BDSM. Gaiman has vehemently denied these allegations, saying in part, “I have never done non-consensual sexual things with anybody. Ever.” He has admitted to past relationships, however, and said they have been consensual.
These claims have had major implications for Gaiman’s projects. Amazon’s “Good Omens” will end with just one 90-minute episode instead of a full third season, and Gaiman will no longer be involved. Disney halted so-called “development” on an adaptation of “The Graveyard Book,” and Dark Horse Comics pulled the plug on the “Anansi Boys” comic series, with which it was working alongside Gaiman.
The second season of The Sandman, however, is still set to be released this year, despite these developments. The series, which first premiered in 2022, features Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the dream world’s cosmic ruler. The new series will delve more into the stories from the original comic series.
