Netflix’s Avatar Season 2 Confirms Shocking Toph

Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix are buzzing about a major update as the live-action take on the classic show preps for Season 2. Miya Cech — set to portray Toph Beifong in the new season — has teased an “obvious” way in which the character will be depicted differently.

Toph is described as “a little older and slightly more feminine” in an interview with The Direct, with Miya Cech saying the show will take the character “in a different direction.” She said she wanted to give the character a more human feel since Toph initially was a cartoon. Cech also had a meeting with Michaela Jill Murphy, the original voice actress for Toph, and was thankful that they had similar ideas about Toph.

Fans React to Toph’s New Look

Toph is a beloved character from the original Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. She is a blind Earthbender introduced in Season 2 of the Nickelodeon show as a strong and fearless character who does things her own way. In the original cartoon, she was young, tough and didn’t give a hoot about being ladylike or proper.

Some fans are excited to see a more mature Toph, with just the slightest touch of femininity, while some others aren’t so sure. Many are concerned that too many changes might compromise the character they’ve known and loved for years.

Avatar’s Mixed Reviews on Netflix

The Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 was released in 2024. Some hailed the exhilarating visuals and grand action sequences, but critics delivered mixed to negative overall verdicts. Nonetheless, the show has an enormous following and is barreling toward Season 2.

Tyler Eisen, who voiced Aang in the original cartoon, has recently commented on the live-action remake. It’s difficult to meet everyone’s expectations when a show means so much to people,” he said. “They did take some risks, they were bold enough,” he said at MegaCon Orlando 2025, “and I think it paid off.”
