Thunderbolts

Marvel’s new comic, Thunderbolts: Doomstrike #2, has been digging into a bit of history for some (mostly) lesser-known heroes this week, including Sal Romero, aka Ghost Rider ’44, who was introduced during World War II.

This issue finds Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, on the run after being falsely accused of demolishing his hometown, Shelbyville, Indiana. In a bid to resist Doctor Doom’s tyrannical regime, Bucky partners with old allies like Sal Romero to blow up Doom’s supply lines.

Sal Romero made their first appearance in 2023’s Incredible Hulk #6 He was a fearless Spirit of Vengeance during World War II. In the here and now, Sal had mysteriously come back to life to protect a young boy named Leo. This is because Mother of Horrors wanted every supernatural being in the universe to hunt the Hulk, but Leo was bonded strongly with him and he don’t let that happen.

Thunderbolts: Doomstrike is part of Marvels One World Under Doom event. This plot line features Doctor Doom becoming Sorcerer Supreme and taking control of the world. In this way he lets nations go about their affairs, as long as they obey his orders. Marvel story with depth and emotion, say writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. They say that the purpose of the Thunderbolts is to demonstrate the consequences of the heroes taking a public stand against Doom, and how they must change their tactics actually to affect change.

In this issue, Bucky Barnes chooses to hit at Doctor Doom’s resources by going after a supply cargo train that is aiding Doom’s regime. Bucky summons Sal Romero, the World War II Ghost Rider, when their initial attack fails, for assistance. This partnership celebrates the continuing struggle against Doom’s dominion, uniting champions from differing times to combat the same foe.
