Daredevil

It looks like we need attachment as Marvel fans. The black armored version of Daredevil costume that remains one of Marvel’s most contentious designs is making a comeback.

Originally depicted in 1993, this look raised some eyebrows in the comic book world. However the design has increasingly won over fans in the years since, thanks in no small part to a wave of nostalgia for all things ’90s.

Now Marvel is bringing that suit back — not just for a side story or limited series, but as part of the main Daredevil storyline. This much-anticipated reunion starts with Daredevil #20, arriving in stores this April. Written by Saladin Ahmed and illustrated by José Luis Soares, the issue will show us Matt Murdock suiting up in his iconic black armor to face a brand new foe.

Why the Black Armor Matters

This black armored version of the costume first appeared in Daredevil #321 in the “Fall From Grace” storyline, by writer D.G. Chichester and artist Scott McDaniel. The edgy design was divisive amongst fans at the time. Some loved the darker, grittier feel, while others missed Daredevil’s classic red suit.

Marvel revived the costume in 2023 for the Daredevil: Black Armor miniseries. Chichester himself came back to tell the story, and had stated how thrilled he was to revisit the era. “It’s an unexpected thrill to return to Matt Murdock’s neighborhood,” Chichester said.

With this new revival, Marvel is getting onboard with the ’90s nostalgia wave that has taken over pop culture. The return of the black armor is likely to reignite conversation among longtime fans and new ones alike.

Daredevil #20: What to Expect

Matt Murdock returns not just in his black armor, but on top of encountering new conflicts, both as Daredevil and in the endeavors in his life, in Daredevil #20. Matt reconnects with an ex that adds a touch of romance to the story in addition to plenty of action and drama.

To tease what’s to come, Marvel has released a variant cover by artist Philip Tan. All of which is captured in this fantastic piece of art which showcases its stylish, set up design and is a constant reminder of its almost custom nature.

Here’s what’s coming in the next issue:

Title: Daredevil #20

A Nostalgic Nudge With a New Stick

The black armor stirs memories of a defining moment in Daredevil’s history — an era before an even darker trend swept the comic book industry. It brings this costume into the contemporary plot of the story that Marvel is offering fans a blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Although fans had mixed reactions to the black armor when it first debuted, the suit has since achieved cult status. The question now is whether this resurgence will appeal to contemporary viewers — or ignite fresh controversy.

Daredevil’s Legacy Lives On

Marvel’s choice to bring back the black armor speaks to the lay of the land as its characters continue to evolve. Through combinations of classic elements and new storytelling, the company keeps its heroes relevant and exciting.

No matter where you stand with Daredevil as a character, whether you are a pining Diehard or come to the Bullseye-attracting series from the MCU, Daredevil #20 promises a rollicking muston. Set a date for April 9 and prepare to see the black armor back in action once more!
