In a wild twist that’s left fans stunned, Spider-Man comes back from the dead—but not in the way you’d expect. In Marvel’s latest comic storyline, The 8 Deaths of Spider-Man, the beloved superhero is reborn as a version of Juggernaut, one of Marvel’s most unstoppable characters.
Yes, you read that right. Spider-Man becomes the “Spider-Naut” in the penultimate issue of this dramatic arc—Amazing Spider-Man #69—and it’s got the entire Marvel Universe talking.
Spider-Man Is Dead—Or Was, Until Now
Let’s start with the basics. In this storyline, Spider-Man dies. But this isn’t just any death—it’s the kind that involves cosmic powers, mystic relics, and impossible choices.
The series began with Doctor Doom, now both Sorcerer Supreme and Emperor of Earth, passing on a big responsibility to Spider-Man. He gave him magical armor and eight powerful items called Reeds of Raggadorr, which can bring people back to life. Spidey’s mission? To save the world from the deadly scions of Cyttorak.
Cyttorak is one of Marvel’s most powerful mystical beings—he’s the one behind the powers of Juggernaut. Long ago, eight ancient entities, including Cyttorak, made a bet called the Wager of the Octessence, creating magical totems that give superpowers to anyone who touches them.
That’s how Cain Marko became the original Juggernaut. But even his powers weren’t enough to stop the deadly cosmic force known as the Blight, a dark energy that destroys life itself.
Spider-Man’s Final Sacrifice
During this dangerous mission, Spider-Man uses up all eight resurrection Reeds. He used four to bring himself back from the dead during earlier battles, and the last four to save Aunt May and three innocent civilians.
Eventually, he dies again—this time for real—at the hands of one of the Blight-powered villains, Callix. After killing Spider-Man, Callix even turns on his own siblings. Only his twin sister, Cyra, survives.
The situation becomes hopeless. The X-Men are corrupted by the Blight. The universe is on the edge of destruction. Juggernaut is the only hero left who isn’t affected, thanks to his connection to Cyttorak.
How Spider-Man Comes Back—As the “Spider-Naut”
In a powerful moment, Spider-Man’s selfless actions inspire Cyra to see things differently. Phil Coulson, Marvel’s embodiment of Death, tells her that love for life is what makes the universe meaningful.
He explains that Cyttorak—who hasn’t been fighting the Blight—might actually feel love for his children. That changes everything.
Moved by this, Cyra helps bring Spider-Man back one last time—but now, he’s transformed. With the unstoppable power of the Juggernaut, he becomes the Spider-Naut, ready to take on Callix and protect the universe once again.
