Dragon Ball Legends Surprises Fans

The game has a tradition of playfully celebrating such events, and Dragon Ball Legends has once again put its best foot (or tail) forward for April Fool’s Day this year.

In a funny-concept intro trailer adding Cyborg Mercenary Tao, which should appeal to fans of the original Dragon Ball series. Geez, they haven’t even given Kirin a home yet and they’re putting Mercenary Tao up for consideration.

Mercenary Tao (aka “The World’s Greatest Assassin”), who’s first seen in the “Commander Red Saga” when he’s been hired by the Red Ribbon Army to kill Goku. Though he’d have them in skill, he was still defeated by the young Saiyan. Tao rebuilt himself as a cyborg in an act of revenge, granting him upgraded abilities. However, his later attempts to duel the Z fighters, like a quick defeat at the hands of Tien Shinhan at the World Martial Arts Tournament, were largely unsuccessful.

Dragon Ball Legends is a free to play mobile game that mixes card-based action with RPG elements. It launched in May 2018. Players are able to gather and form teams of various Z fighters to take part in both online PvP battles, and a unique story featuring Shallot, a Saiyan character who was created specifically for the game by series creator Akira Toriyama. As of March 31, 2025, the game includes over 400 playable characters, such as the newest addition from Dragon Ball  Daima.

Although the Cyborg Mercenary Tao trailer was part of an April Fool’s joke, it showcases the developers’ commitment to engaging the community through creative and nostalgic content. Fans can still play Dragon Ball Legends on iOS and Android devices, and read the Dragon Ball manga and its sequel, Dragon Ball Super, in English from VIZ Media. You can also find the series’ various anime adaptations available to stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Netflix.
