Marvel Studios expanding its universe with formats beyond the movies, like TV series and Special Presentations. Special Presentations are one-off, hour-long features meant to provide a taste of new characters and storylines without the investment of a full series or film. Marvel has so far released two such specials — “Werewolf by Night” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.”
“Werewolf by Night” introduced the audiences to a secret society of monster hunters vying for a powerful relic. This was praised for practical effects and black-and-white cinematography, in line with classic horror films. In contrast, “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” delivers a merry tale with the Guardians working together to find an ideal gift for Peter Quill that brings levity to the MCU.
These Special Presentations have been well-received among fans, and people have enjoyed their concise story lines and unique styles. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also confirmed that more specials are in the works. But fans may not see the next movie until 2026 at the earliest.
The Special Presentations were a hit, but there are reports that Marvel may be rethinking how often we’ll be seeing these kinds of spinoff features. Decisions about production costs and scheduling are significantly influenced by the importance of keeping the interest of an audience. Also, with Marvel bringing in new characters, such as the X-Men, it may shift their content their focus.
Ultimately, though Marvel’s Special Presentations have provided some novel and interesting material, the studio seems to be reassessing their place in the larger MCU plan. Expect more innovative storytelling, but patience will be necessary as Marvel decides its where to go next.
