The experience of walking a mile in Death’s shoes shattered Spider-Man to his core.
Following his victory over the fiery Callix, the title character in Amazing Spider-Man #65 finds himself facing the villain’s sister, Cyra, after a series of encounters with a demonic Scion of Cyttorak. Surprisingly, Cyra wants to test Spider-Man’s heart rather than his strength or fortitude by making him witness his loved ones’ unavoidable deaths unfold in front of him. Even worse, even Death himself cannot alleviate the suffering, despite Phil Coulson’s constant willingness to support one of his fellow heroes in their time of need.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson, who was first developed for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuted in 2008’s Iron Man, where Clark Gregg renownedly played him. Agent Coulson, a superhero enthusiast who later became a tried-and-true powerhouse in his own right, quickly won over fans to the point where his leading position on the enduring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series replaced his later appearances in other MCU films. Unlike his comic book counterpart, Coulson was able to preserve his hero status during his time on the silver and small screens.
Although Agent Coulson in Marvel Comics had many of the same traits as the original, his overall development diverged greatly from that of his MCU counterpart. Phil Coulson was sent to the depths of Hell when he was killed during the Secret Empire events of 2015. He struck a bargain with the demon Mephisto there, and the latter gave Coulson the Pandemonium Cube’s power, which he exploited to reshape the Marvel Universe to fit his own twisted, jingoistic vision. The events of Heroes Reborn in 2021 began with this, and it ended with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes defeating Coulson and his Squadron Supreme.
After Coulson’s second demise at the end of Heroes Reborn, the character was briefly dormant before being brought back to life by the Death Stone, one of the most recent additions to the larger Marvel mythology. By giving its possessor control over death itself, this recently found Infinity Stone turns the user into Death, as the character is known in Marvel Comics. Though the Mad Titan isn’t exactly the greatest threat facing Phil Coulson and the other members of the Infinity Watch right now, Thanos has had his sights set on the Death Stone since its debut.
Marvel Comics is now selling Amazing Spider-Man #65.
