A Disney Executive Responds to the Acolyte’s Cancellation Four Months Later
Disney executive Alan Bergman finally explains the decision to discontinue The Acolyte four months later. The cliffhanger ending of Leslye Headland’s The Acolyte, formally canceled in August, is likely only to be explored in future tie-ins. The news of the High Republic Era adventure’s cancellation shocked the fanbase even though it was set centuries before the Skywalker tale and had proven to be quite contentious. This was the first official cancellation of a Star Wars Disney+ TV series.
In a 2024 round-up with Vulture, Disney’s Alan Bergman, co-chair of Disney Entertainment and in charge of managing all of the company’s platforms and content creation, finally addressed the cancellation four months later. He clarified that while he was pleased with his performance, “the cost structure of that title, to be honest, wasn’t where we needed it to go and make a season two.” That’s why we didn’t do that, then.” Therefore, Bergman claims that The Acolyte was terminated because it was just too costly for its audience.
What Star Wars Can Learn From Alan Bergman’s Remarks
One of the most expensive Star Wars TV series was The Acolyte; according to UK tax returns, Lucasfilm spent £172 million ($231 million) on the series, although early estimates that the overall budget was between $170 and 180 million. It certainly makes sense that The Acolyte needed high viewership to be revived for a second season, considering the cost. Ultimately, there was just not enough demand to cover the expenses.
Concerns regarding Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which is thought to have cost roughly $136 million, will undoubtedly be raised by the comment. Skeleton Crew didn’t even enter the streaming top 10 with its premiere, so viewership seems low for now, but there is good word-of-mouth, so it might do better in the long run. The outcome of this will only become clear with time.
Our Opinion on the Cancellation of the Acolyte
Parts of the fan community were disheartened by the cancellation of the highly contentious Acolyte. The fact that the cliffhanger conclusion hinted at a second season that will be much more thrilling than the first and feature the first look at the live-action Darth Plagueis doesn’t help either. Those viewers who were interested in the show feel a great sense of loss and are quite irritated. Campaigners with a vocal voice who advocated for the cancellation felt vindicated. To put it bluntly, it’s a bit of a mess.
Thankfully, the reception for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been better than The Acolyte’s. After a really difficult year, this at least indicates that Lucasfilm is capping off the year with a hit movie. Viewers can anticipate Andor season 2, Ahsoka season 2, and several other unidentified and enigmatic TV series. This year’s Star Wars Celebration will undoubtedly unveil more.
