Cursed with an insatiable thirst for violence that endangers those closest to him, Battle Beast roams the cosmos in search of the one warrior strong enough to slay him… so that he may die before he endangers anyone else” — that’s the description of Battle Beast #1 in Skybound’s Invincible universe. But no one seems able to stop the deadliest warrior in the galaxy—unless he does the unthinkable—even with all the powerful Viltrumites, like Omni-Man and Invincible, around.
Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1 features one of the first blind bag schemes for variant covers, which means fans will be able to walk away with any of the covers, a lucky treat. They will also contain rare surprise comics that may or may not be related to Battle Beast, or indeed the Invincible Universe, all of which will be sealed in the blind bags. Similar to the surprise blind bag comics, the don’t plan to reveal them to the public until Batel Beast #1 hits stores.
Kirkman, the man behind Invincible, is eager to be back in comic book land. “What am I supposed to say? I just can’t get enough of the Invincible Universe. I never took a break since I went directly from the comic series, into the animated series. However, I was really itching to do something else while I was animating the series,” he said. “For you long-time viewers, there is that huge black hole of Battle Beast appearances between Invincible #19 and #55. I’m really excited to have Ryan Ottley — co-creator of Battle Beast — join me in telling the story as there’s so much to say.”
Ottley talked about his partnership with Kirkman and Battle Beast. “When Robert and I first created Battle Beast way back in Invincible #19 as a way to increase Invincible’s Rogues gallery, I wasn’t sure if he’d be a big character who’d come back throughout the series or a character who’d die a terrible gory death right away,” he explained. “Robert could order a death at any time, and I would always seize the opportunity to execute the visual execution. He always kept me and the readers on our toes.” Fortunately, Battle Beast gained popularity and survived to tell a more extensive story.
Ottley went on, “Working with Robert once more in the Invincible Universe is incredible. I told him a while back that I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, and when he suggested that we work on a Battle Beast series, I jumped at the chance to work on a creator-owned book again and expand the Invincible Universe even further. I’m thrilled to be back at Sky-Bound and Image Comics, and I’m looking forward to you seeing the tale we’re developing in this series. This is the most fun I’ve had since Invincible.
On April 16, 2025, comic book stores will carry Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #1, written by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley.
