Pixar announced this week that Coco 2 is in development almost 10 years after its first film stole hearts around the world. The first Coco, which arrived in 2017, recounted the emotional tale of Miguel, a young boy who dreamed of becoming a musician despite his family’s strict prohibition against music.
The Agustin family was a strikingly one-dimensional premise for a Pixar film — a talented young boy with a family of musicians who reject his dreams — but with dazzling visuals, an emotionally moving narrative, and a catchy soundtrack, Coco became one of Pixar’s most beloved movies.
And now Disney and Pixar have taken it upon themselves to revisit the magical world of Coco with a sequel. The announcement was made by Disney’s chief executive, Bob Iger, during a shareholders’ meeting in March 2025, and he said the film remained in early development but would brim with “humor, heart, and adventure.”
Coco: Why It Took So Long for a Sequel
The announcement caught fans off-guard, as Coco wrapped up with such a strong, emotional ending that felt complete. However, with the original film grossing more than $800 million worldwide, it’s also clear the story still has plenty of affection among audiences — and presumably there were some fiscal considerations that figured into the decision to continue the franchise.
Though Pixar at this early stage isn’t revealing much, the announcement is enough to establish that Coco 2 is real and it’s happening. Expected release year: 2029 The sequel will arrive 12 years after the first film.
Who’s Behind Coco 2?
Coco 2 already has a huge amount of new details to dig into, along with the promising return of Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina as directors. Their involvement ensures the sequel will have a similar tone, style, and emotional depth as the original. This is somewhat atypical for Pixar, which often sends new filmmakers to direct its sequels. One such example being Inside Out 2 directed by Kelsey Mann, not Pete Docter who did the original.
What Will Pixar’s Line-Up Look Like With Coco 2 In It?
At the moment, Pixar’s slate is full. Elio comes in June 2025, Hoppers in March 2026 and Toy Story 5 in June 2026. Incredibles 3 is also in development, though it doesn’t have a release date.
Compared to other announced projects from the studio, Coco 2 is the one furthest down the line, with a proposed date of 2029. So while fans are thrilled, the wait will be a long one.
Final Thoughts
Coco 2 was officially announced by the studio, and while it’s still very early on in development, the news alone is enough to get the fans around the world dreaming. In other words, guardians of the original remains in place, and with Pixar once again crafting a potentially tearjerking yarn, the sequel should remain true to the spirit of the first movie. Although we’ll have to wait some years, the spell cast by Coco is not up.
