G.I. Joe A Real American Hero

Skybound and Image Comics have revealed a thrilling new chapter in the G.I. Joe universe. The spotlight this time is on Spirit, one of the most iconic characters from the original team, in a brand-new comic titled “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Spirit #1.”

Set to release on April 16, this one-shot is part of Skybound’s “Silent Missions” series — a collection of intense, dialogue-free stories that let the action do all the talking. These stories follow up on the legendary G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #21, a fan-favorite issue famous for having no words, just pure visual storytelling.

What’s the Story About?

The new Spirit issue is written and illustrated by Leonardo Romero (known for Birds of Prey) and colored by Cris Peter (Casanova). The story follows Spirit, a Native American G.I. Joe hero, and his trusted eagle companion, Freedom, as they set out on a rescue mission. After saving an injured animal hit by a car, they track the creature into a deep, mysterious forest.

But what starts as a simple rescue mission quickly turns dark. Spirit and Freedom soon stumble upon a “grotesque experiment” hidden in the woods. While exact details are under wraps, the story promises high-stakes action, heart, and intense visuals — all without a single line of dialogue.

The Creative Team Behind the Magic

Editorial Director Alex Antone praised Romero’s work, calling the issue a “masterclass in storytelling.” He added that Romero’s version of Spirit highlights the character’s heart, bravery, and the fierce bond between a man and his eagle.

The comic will be available with multiple covers:

More Silent Missions Are Coming

The Spirit one-shot is the third release in the “Silent Missions” series. The lineup includes:

Beach Head on April 2

Jinx on April 9

Spirit on April 16

Roadblock on April 23

Duke on April 30

Each comic explores a different G.I. Joe character, all without dialogue, giving fans a fresh and unique experience.

G.I. Joe’s New Universe is Just Getting Started

This reboot is part of Skybound’s Energon Universe, which connects G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Void Rivals — a new line of stories by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead). The universe brings classic characters into modern times with a darker, more cinematic approach.

For longtime fans and newcomers alike, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Spirit #1 is shaping up to be a standout release — full of heart, action, and stunning art.
