Super Bowl 2025: Universal Gives First Look at ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Post the Decision Turned Into an FAQ This new movie reinterprets the beloved 2010 animated classic — which was based on a children’s book by Cressida Cowell.
The story centers around a young Viking named Hiccup, played by Mason Thames, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a dragon, Toothless. Hiccup grows up in a culture of dragon hunters, believing dragons are enemies until he realizes they are not.
The teaser opens with Hiccup reaching out tentatively to Toothless, a moment that parallels the start of their bond. It then slides into scenes of the pair flying through the skies together doing impressive visual effects work for the film. It also teases the struggles they will have to overcome, including a dark battle on the horizon threatens their budding friendship.
Directed by Dean DeBlois, who also directed the original animated trilogy, the film features a star-studded cast. As Astrid Hofferson, Hiccup’s fellow Viking and love interest, Nico Parker joins the cast. Gerard Butler returns as Stoick the Vast, Hiccup’s dad and the chieftain of Berk. The cast also boasts Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, and more as Vikings in this village.
The live-action adaptation promises to remain faithful to the original story while providing a new lens. Examples include the first ever meeting of Hiccup and Toothless and further have it shown in real life. With its heavy reliance on practical sets and filming with IMAX formats in mind, the film will be a visual treat that fans will talk about for years.
Due in theaters on June 13, 2025, “How to Train Your Dragon” is sure to delight both longtime fans and new players. With its mix of adventure, friendship and stunning visuals, the film is sure to be one of the standout times at the summer movies.
