5 Canceled Video Game Sequels

The gaming industry is full of surprises, but not all of them are pleasant. While some franchises continue to dominate the charts, others see their highly anticipated sequels scrapped before they even get off the ground.

Game development is risky, and sometimes even beloved titles don’t cut due to financial issues, creative differences, or shifting market trends. Here’s a look at five canceled video game sequels that had the potential to be huge but never saw the light of day.

Batman: Arkham Knight Sequel – Project Sabbath

Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series set new standards for superhero games, making a sequel to Arkham Knight seem like a sure thing. Codenamed Project Sabbath, this game was supposed to take place ten years after Arkham Knight, introducing Damien Wayne as the new Batman while Bruce Wayne took on an Alfred-like mentor role. The game promised a bigger Gotham City, advanced combat mechanics inspired by Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis System, and a terrifying lineup of villains, including Harley Quinn, Gorilla Grodd, and the Court of Owls.

Despite all this, Project Sabbath was canceled before it reached full production. Many speculate that Warner Bros.’ shift towards live-service games led to its demise, leaving fans wondering what could have been.

Silent Hills – A Horror Masterpiece Lost in Time

Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro’s Silent Hills was shaping up to be one of the most terrifying horror games ever made. With The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus set to play the protagonist, and the eerie P.T. demo leaving players haunted for weeks, the hype was through the roof.

Unfortunately, corporate disputes between Kojima and Konami led to the game’s abrupt cancellation. Kojima left Konami, taking Reedus and Del Toro with him to work on Death Stranding. Fans of the horror genre are still mourning what could have been an unforgettable psychological thriller.

Prince of Persia: Redemption – The Lost Sequel

Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia franchise was a major success in the early 2000s, but after The Forgotten Sands, the series went silent. However, in 2020, leaked footage revealed that Ubisoft had been working on Prince of Persia: Redemption—a sequel featuring Assassin’s Creed-like parkour and time-rewinding mechanics. It was pitched in 2011 but ultimately scrapped in favor of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which had become Ubisoft’s top priority.

Though never officially announced, Prince of Persia: Redemption remains a reminder of how easily an iconic franchise can fade away in the face of changing industry trends.

Sleeping Dogs 2 – A Sequel That Never Woke Up

Sleeping Dogs was a cult hit, praised for its gripping story and martial arts combat. A sequel was in the works, continuing Wei Shen’s story, but Square Enix decided to pull the plug due to concerns over its return on investment. Instead, the developers at United Front Games were tasked with creating Triad Wars, a multiplayer spin-off, which also flopped and was canceled shortly after its beta phase.

The cancellation of Sleeping Dogs 2 was a major loss for open-world action fans, especially considering United Front Games shut down entirely in 2016.

After the success of Dead Space and Dead Space 2, fans were eager for more. However, after Dead Space 3 underperformed financially in 2013, EA scrapped plans for Dead Space 4 and shut down its developer, Visceral Games. A decade later, in 2023, EA’s Motive Studio revived the series with a Dead Space remake. While the remake was well-received, it still didn’t generate enough sales to justify Dead Space 4, leading to yet another cancellation.

It seems like every time Dead Space 4 gets close to happening, it gets put on ice again. Fans can only hope EA reconsiders in the future.

Final Thoughts

Canceled video games are an unfortunate reality of the industry, leaving players to wonder what could have been. While some franchises get second chances, others fade into obscurity, with only leaked footage or concept art serving as a reminder of their existence. With gaming evolving rapidly, who knows? Maybe some of these lost sequels will make a surprise comeback one day.
